Northern Oddities - Design Collection from Finland was a joyful manifesto for Finnish eccentric lifestyle and its pure form of design. It was a story of eight curious Finnish design brands on their crusade to New York City.

The exhibition and the events in NYC are over now. We hope we were able to offer some comprehensively memorable pitstops to you. Thank you New York, we will be back! Maybe sooner than you might even think of...

AS HAPPENED AT PURE PROFILES

Northern design is known of its pure and simple shapes, colours, profiles and functionality - less is more, as we tend to say.

It was time for silhouette artist Andrea Peitsch to find the essential beauty of one's profile. Andrea is a second generation silhouette artist and raises dairy goats and chickens on a micro farm in a coastal Rhode Island.

Northern Oddities @ NY Internet Week

Nuppu Labs is a collaborative comprised of New York City strategists and Finnish designers and developers. Nuppu Labs were bringing together the best talents from both countries on Thursday 17th of May in a party on a Projective Base location at Broadway.

We were also invited to showcase a sneak preview of Northern Oddities. Thank you all for visiting our corner. We liked you and thought you liked us as well : ). Hope to see you again on Saturday at Odd Fest-party!

FRIENDS-pillows were designed on a European tour of an Costa Rican band. When KAKSITVÅ designers  were homesick, they remembered the faces of their friends, the emotions, the expressions. FRIENDS pillow makes you smile and there is something to do for the whole family with it.

ABOUT KAKSITVÅ

Designer duo Marjo Kuusinen and Piia Keto run together the accessory brand KAKSITVÅ from Helsinki, Finland. KAKSITVÅ products include an entire lifestyle. The collection consists of clothing, jewelry, bags and accessories. In addition, KAKSITVÅ product family includes household items such as pillows, chairs, and tableware.

The inspiration to their work comes from everything that happens around them –countryside life mixed to the adventures around the world. In their spare time designers thrive in the Helsinki nightlife, rapping and searching for the after parties. 

The name of the brand consists of the word two both in Finnish and in Swedish. They came up with the name when they met a pair of Finnish-Swedish twins whose dissimilar personalities inspired them as designers.

Every farm house used to have one big rocking chair in the corner of the family room. The chair was usually reserved for the man of the house. Nowadays young folk wants to have a nostalgic piece of the countryside in their urban homes.

So we finally have arrived to the location 251 Elizabert Street, Nolita, NY. Almost all of our packages had also arrived so we started to unpack and set up the exhibition.

This is how far we got. Look at the nice shop window! There is still things to be done as we are still missing two parcels to arrive, they will be there hopefully tomorrow. Or day after, so be patient. That is what we also try to be...

SILLY OWL

After a hot sauna we Finns enjoy sitting outdoors cooling off. During the midnight summer the sun doesn’t set at all. In a mystical summer night you can perhaps hear a faint sound of an owl. Silly baby owls handmade by Elina are a bit silly, also the word for owl in finnish describe somebody who is a bit silly and goofy.

Oh those hot summer days, summer’s lasting longer than a year. Warm yellow Indian afternoons, bare feet on moist cold rocks, scents of deep green pine forests. Endless freedom, Indian Summer sunsets, golden dusks that never fade to dark. When I was a child I read the stories of Cowboys and Indians. All the adventures I would imagine they had in the deserts I could mimic in the northern woods.

Winter in Finland is dark and cold and it lasts almost half a year. In Lapland the sun doesn’t rise at all. That’s why we need some bright colors and warm knitwear around our necks. We hope they brighten up our days when the sun isn’t available. Pompom makes a bold and a bit humorous statement with it’s shape borrowed from a pearl neclace.
